### ENCODING DETAILS:
The Blu-ray is so bad that the CR WEBDL might honestly be a better way to watch the show.
The BD is low-passed as hell, with visible ringing and halos even to the naked eye (especially in the OP and ED), which makes descaling the anime basically impossible and highly discouraged, mainly because you can’t even confidently determine the kernel used.
To fix this mess, I did a delowpass using the CR raw, which took care of about 95% of the halos and ringing (I couldn’t remove all of it without wrecking the image), and the remaining 5% was cleaned up with fine_dehalo.
The whole anime was scene-filtered, splitting scenes into "normal," "heavy banding," and "flashbacks."
For the normal ones, I applied denoise, deband, AA, and a touch of regrain.
For the heavily banded scenes, I applied denoise plus a bunch of different debanders to tackle the crazy amount of banding, AA, and regrain.
Flashbacks had localized denoise and degrain with a vignette-style mask, then added back dynamic grain using the same vignette mask to keep the original vibe. There are also other specific scenes that were filtered differently (for example the panties scene and the "brother I'm stuck under the band" scene XD).
Another issue with the Blu-ray was the chroma. For whatever reason, the BD chroma lacked detail and had super blurry edges, which caused slight chroma bleeding (which honestly seems like a "feature" of the anime). When I compared it to the CR chroma, I noticed the CR had much sharper edges and retained detail that the BD had lost. So I ended up fully replacing the BD chroma with the CR one, except for two episodes where the color tone was changed in the BD. You can't really see the difference without 500x, but it was worth it for the best quality release.
The OP was also filtered scene-by-scene (over 20 scenes) to fix all the different kinds of grain they threw in. Because of the heavy grain, the source was very starved so I preferred going aggressive with a deblock and losing a bit of detail rather than keeping that ugly blocking. The OP also has a bunch of masks to match the vignette effect and other grain distributions while staying faithful to the original style. Each ED was filtered with a custom chain to fit its specific needs.
This anime has a strange issue with banding: in some particularly flat areas of the backgrounds, there are random patches of very light color, which I assume are there for artistic reasons. However, these color patches (partially lost in the BD's chroma) gave me quite a few problems when trying to apply debanding. I tried to handle it as best as I could, but I'm not fully satisfied with the result, which is why I'm definitely planning a V2 for the end of this year.
Lastly, the encode was done with CRF 14 for the episodes part and CRF 13 for the OP and ED.
I want to thank the JET Discord server for the many tips and my friends for discouraging me.
